Cool Candidate: The Road to Becoming a Certified HVAC Technician

Are you a senior in college, still trying to figure out what to do after graduation? Or perhaps you're at a dead end job and starting to feel like Joe from Joe Versus the Volcano? Flickering office light and all? Don't be discouraged. The Professional HVAC Council is here to help.  We're a national organization representing hundreds of air conditioning and heating companies across the country, including A&B AC Heating and Refrigeration in Newport News, Virginia.  Our job is to lobby for the HVAC industry and motivate potential HVAC technician candidates to apply themselves and pursue their dreams.

Do you have what it takes to make it in HVAC?

Okay. Let's get started.  Do you have what it takes to repair an air conditioning unit in the sweltering heat? How about fixing a heating system when the temperature drops below 20 degrees inside a customer's home? An certified HVAC technician is a high pressure with incredible amount of job satisfaction.  In fact, our pool of professional air conditioning and heating repair techs, report they often feel like a superhero when they fix a problem and save the day for a customer.  In fact, that reminds me of a story I like to tell to anyone considering a career in this profession.  It was the middle of winter and a huge storm just dumped 20 feet of snow on the ground.

As the snow swirled around town like a snow globe, a family in the area was bringing their newborn twins from the hospital.  When this family arrived home, they quickly discovered their furnace wasn't working.  In fact, their furnace must have quit while they were at the hospital because the temperature inside their home hovered right around 15 degrees.  The family called their local furnace technician and within a half hour he arrived and began working on repairs.  Within a few minutes, the furnace was up and running and the house filled up with warm air.  It took about three hours for the home to reach a comfortable 72 degrees. That night the certified furnace repair tech literally changed that families life.  It doesn't get any better than that.  You have the opportunity to make a difference too!

During a job shadow you will follow a certified air conditioning and heating technician around for the day.  You will visit several job sites and examine commercial HVAC systems.  While you will not be paid for the job shadow, the experience is priceless.

HVAC Schools

If you decide to pursue a career in air conditioning and heating, you will have your choice of several tech schools.  A tech school is a two year program aimed at preparing students for a rewarding and fulfilling career in the commercial and residential HVAC business.  In addition to learning the technical part of the career, you will also learn  how to own and operate your very own business.  Most students who graduate from a two year HVAC tech program will go onto to become business owners.  Operating your own air conditiong and heating business is a great opportunity to make an even bigger difference in your community.

If you're still on the fence about whether or not to pursue a career in commercial and residential heating and cooling, the PHC will be holding a free seminar in August. This will be an opportunity for you to meet face to face with the owners of A &B AC Heating and Refrigeration and other similar companies.  Bring a resume.  We look forward to helping you find your calling in life.
